The Armory

Where raw alloys become the edge that stands between humanity and extinction.

The Armory

The Armory is a standard base facility in the XCOM video game series, serving as the equipment bay where the player equips soldiers and views their gear. It is one of the most frequently visited rooms in any XCOM base, acting as the mechanical bridge between the resources gathered in the field and the combat readiness of the squad.

In the original XCOM (1994) and Terror from the Deep, no construction is required; equipment management is available from the start. In XCOM: Enemy Unknown and XCOM 2, the Armory is available from the

Lore & Background

In the original XCOM (1994) and its sequel Terror from the Deep, the Armory functioned as a supply depot: the player browsed a catalogue of weapons and armor, spending a limited budget to equip each soldier before a mission. The room was a practical, almost bureaucratic space—rows of racks, a terminal, a ledger of funds. The fantasy was that of a quartermaster managing a lean, underfunded defense force.

In Their Own Story

The lights in the Armory hum at a low, steady frequency. A technician in a grease-stained coverall slots a salvaged rifle barrel onto the workbench, aligns it with the calibration jig, and feeds the alloy into the press. The readout ticks up: +1 damage. She logs it, moves to the next rack. Outside, the base's alarm system is silent for now, but the Adversary's ships are still out there, patient and black against the stars. Every point of armor she can add tonight is a soldier who might walk out of the next drop zone breathing. She pulls the next shell casing from the tray and starts again.

Reader's Guide

The Armory is a single-room base facility, typically rendered as a utilitarian workshop with workbenches, weapon racks, and armor stands. In XCOM: Enemy Unknown and XCOM 2, the player interacts with it through the base-management interface: selecting a weapon or armor slot, then spending available resources to increment its damage or protection rating. Each upgrade tier costs more than the last, creating a natural pacing curve across the campaign. Gameplay-wise, the Armory is a soft constraint. You can only upgrade equipment you already possess, and the rate at which you can improve your kit is gated by how many resources your missions generate. Neglecting the Armory early on means your squad will be outclassed by mid-campaign enemies; over-investing in it starves other facilities like the Lab or Engineering. Narratively, the Armory carries low dramatic weight but high structural importance. It is the conversion point between the tactical layer (missions) and the strategic layer (base management). In the original 1994 XCOM and Terror from the Deep, its role was purchasing rather than upgrading, and the room read more as a supply office than a workshop. Across titles, the visual presentation shifts from a simple icon-and-menu in the 1994 games to a fully rendered room in the 2012 and 2016 entries, with animated workbenches and resource readouts reinforcing the workshop fantasy.
