Plasma Armor
Three points of plating between your operative and the Adversary's next shot.
Plasma Armor is a Medium-weight armor piece available to XCOM soldiers in XCOM 2, the 2016 tactical strategy game developed by Firaxis Games. It occupies the standard armor slot and provides a flat armor value that absorbs incoming damage before it reaches the soldier's health pool. As a mid-tier research item, Plasma Armor represents a step up from basic Light armor and a step below the heavier, higher-protection options in the XCOM 2 armory. It is designed to be a versatile, class-agnostic choice for squads that value a balance of protection and mobility.

Lore & Background
In the XCOM 2 campaign, the Adversary's occupation of Earth has left the remnants of XCOM's research infrastructure in ruins. Recovering alien technology from Adversary outposts and missions is the primary way the player unlocks new equipment, and Plasma Armor is one of the standard armory unlocks available through that research pipeline. The name reflects the Adversary's use of plasma-based energy systems, repurposed here into a wearable defensive plate for human soldiers. Medium armor in XCOM 2 sits between the lighter, more mobile Light plates and the bulkier Heavy options. Plasma Armor's three-point armor value makes it a popular default for many squad compositions: it is enough to absorb a standard rifle hit or a light alien projectile without forcing the soldier to sacrifice the agility that Heavy armor would cost. Because the armor slot accepts only one piece at a time, choosing Plasma Armor over a Heavy option is a deliberate trade-off between survivability and movement. The piece is not exclusive to any single class. A Ranger, a Specialist, or a Viper can all slot Plasma Armor into their loadout, making it a flexible choice for player-builders who want consistent protection across a mixed squad rather than specializing every operative into a single weight class.
In Their Own Story
The briefing room smelled of recycled air and cold coffee. Sergeant Okafor set the alien-tech crate on the table, the Adversary's sigils still faintly glowing along its seams. "Priority recovery," she said, tapping the manifest. "Plasma plating. Enough to keep three squads out of the morgue this cycle."
Across the room, a fresh-recruit Viper watched the crate with the wide-eyed reverence of someone who had already lost two teammates to a single Adversary rifle round. "Does it… does it actually stop the big ones?" she asked. Okafor didn't look up from her tablet. "It stops the small ones. The big ones, you dodge. That's the job." She slid the crate toward the armory tech. "Research it. Equip it. And for the love of God, don't let it sit in a locker while your squad runs in light plates again."
Reader's Guide
Plasma Armor is a Medium-weight armor piece in XCOM 2. It provides 3 armor points, which absorb damage before it reaches the soldier's health. Only one armor piece can be equipped at a time, so Plasma Armor replaces any Light or Heavy plate in the same slot. Obtained through research: Plasma Armor is unlocked by spending alien tech in the Armory section of the research tree. It does not require a specific class or prior tech beyond the standard progression path, making it one of the earlier meaningful armor upgrades available. Tech-tree position: It sits in the mid-tier of the armory research, after the initial Light armor options and before the heavier, higher-value plates. It is part of the base XCOM 2 campaign and is not gated behind DLC content. Tactical niche: Because it is class-agnostic, Plasma Armor is a safe default for mixed squads. It gives enough protection to absorb a standard enemy hit while preserving the movement and action economy that Heavy armor would sacrifice. For squads built around aggressive, mobile play (Rangers, Vipers, Specialists), Plasma Armor is often the preferred middle ground. For tank-oriented builds (Archers, Vipers in defensive roles), players may eventually outgrow it in favor of Heavy options, but it remains a solid choice through the mid-campaign. It can also be found as a field pickup or mission reward in some XCOM 2 scenarios, though research is the primary and most reliable source.
Did You Know?
- In XCOM 2, armor value is determined solely by weight class (Light = 2, Medium = 3, Heavy = 4), so Plasma Armor's protection is identical to every other Medium plate.
- Plasma Armor is class-agnostic: any soldier, from a fresh Recruit to a max-level Viper, can equip it without any class-specific restrictions.
- The armor slot in XCOM 2 accepts only one piece at a time, meaning equipping Plasma Armor means forgoing any other armor plate regardless of its origin.
- Plasma Armor is part of the standard XCOM 2 campaign research tree and does not require any DLC to unlock.
