Mech
One soldier inside a walking fortress, turning the battlefield into a kill zone.
The Mech is a heavily armored, single-pilot combat vehicle in the XCOM franchise, first introduced in XCOM: Enemy Unknown (2012) and carried forward into XCOM 2 (2016). It functions as a mobile fortress for one soldier, combining a thick armored chassis, a high-damage Mech Gun, and a deployable Mech Shield that absorbs incoming fire. Because it is piloted by a single operative rather than a crew, the Mech represents a concentrated investment in one soldier's survivability and offensive punch.

Lore & Background
In the aftermath of first contact, SHODAN-class alien technology proved that conventional infantry armor could not withstand Psionic or heavy alien fire. XCOM's engineering division responded by developing the Mech: a self-contained, single-occupant armored platform designed to let a single elite soldier survive engagements that would otherwise be suicidal. The chassis is welded from scavenged alien alloy, giving it a resilience far beyond standard flak or heavy armor while still permitting the pilot to aim and fire with precision. The Mech's design philosophy is deliberately austere. Rather than spreading protection across a crew, every gram of armor and every watt of power is dedicated to one pilot. The integrated Mech Shield projects a short-duration energy barrier that can negate an incoming attack entirely, while the Mech Gun channels a focused burst of kinetic or energy force capable of shredding even heavily armored alien units. The trade-off is speed: the Mech's mass and power draw make it a fraction of the tile-per-turn movement of a standard soldier, meaning the pilot must plan positioning with care. Across the franchise the Mech has remained a late-game centerpiece. It is the kind of asset that, once fielded, changes the tactical calculus of an entire mission: a Mech-equipped soldier can walk into a squad of Sectopods or Mutons that would otherwise be a death sentence, provided the pilot manages the limited ammunition and shield charges wisely.
In Their Own Story
The rain hammered the corrugated hull of the Mech as Sergeant Okafor settled into the cockpit, the canopy sealing with a hydraulic hiss. Through the narrow sightline she could see the Sectopods advancing in a loose wedge, their legs punching craters into the mud. She had three shots. Three, and then she was just a woman in a very expensive coffin. "XCOM, this is Okafor. I'm going to be a problem."
She dropped the shield first—three hexes of blue-white light bloomed in front of the hull as the lead Sectopod's gun chewed uselessly into the barrier. Then the gun. One round. The Sectopod's thorax caved inward like wet cardboard. Two rounds. The second unit's legs simply stopped. She had one shot left and two more enemies still moving. Okafor exhaled, checked her ammo counter, and began to advance. Slowly. One tile at a time. The Mech groaned under the weight of the terrain, but it held.
Reader's Guide
MECH (Base Vehicle) Research slot: Vehicles category, late-game. No alien-tech prerequisite; requires prior vehicle research. The Mech itself is the chassis and armor. A soldier assigned to it gains a large armored profile, significantly reduced movement per turn compared to infantry, and a pilot-specific action set. Class suitability: any soldier class can pilot, but heavy-armor or assault classes benefit most from the extra survivability. Tactical niche: a mobile anchor that can absorb fire and close distance on high-value targets. It is obtained purely through the research tree, not from alien-tech salvage. MECH SHIELD Research slot: Vehicles category, typically unlocks alongside or after the base Mech. Grants the pilot a deployable energy barrier with a small number of uses per engagement. Each use negates one incoming attack regardless of the attacker's damage. Class suitability: universal; particularly valuable on a pilot who is also carrying the Mech Gun, as it lets the soldier trade a shield charge for a free attack. Tactical niche: a reactive defensive tool—best used when an enemy is already in range and about to fire, rather than proactively. Obtained via research, not salvage. MECH GUN Research slot: Vehicles category, the final Mech-tier project. A high-damage weapon with very limited ammunition per engagement. Damage output is among the highest available to a single soldier. Class suitability: any class, but pairs naturally with a pilot who has the Mech Shield to cover the reload/aim window. Tactical niche: a finisher and anti-armor tool. One or two well-placed shots can eliminate a Sectopod or Muton that would otherwise require a full squad to bring down. Use sparingly; once the rounds are spent the pilot reverts to a standard sidearm. Obtained via research, not salvage.
Did You Know?
- In XCOM: Enemy Unknown, the Mech, Mech Shield, and Mech Gun are three separate research projects within the Vehicles tech tree, meaning you can field a Mech with a gun but no shield, or vice versa.
- The Mech Gun's per-engagement ammunition is extremely limited, making it a 'spend it all or save it' decision that can swing an entire mission.
- If the Mech is destroyed in combat, the pilot is killed, making the vehicle both a shield and a single point of failure.
- The Mech's movement speed is a fraction of that of a standard soldier, so positioning it in range before the enemy acts is a core tactical consideration.
