Psionic Rifle

A bolt of pure psionic force that can freeze an enemy mid-advance.

Psionic Rifle

The Psionic Rifle is a psionic-energy weapon in the XCOM franchise, most prominently featured in XCOM (2012) and XCOM 2. It channels directed psionic energy into a focused bolt that, in addition to dealing damage, carries a chance to stun the target, temporarily removing them from the fight. It occupies a unique niche among XCOM's arsenal as a weapon whose primary tactical value is crowd control rather than raw damage output. Unlike alien-tech weapons salvaged from downed enemies, the Psionic Rifle is a product of XCOM's own research programme, developed by reverse-engineering captured alien psionic technology. It is available to any soldier regardless of class and sits in the mid-game tier of the tech tree, making it a transitional weapon between early-game ballistic arms and late-game heavy ordnance.

Lore & Background

The XCOM research division identified psionic energy as a viable weaponised force after analysing captured Sectoid and Muton specimens. Early experiments with raw psionic discharge proved wildly inaccurate and risked damaging the operator's own neural pathways. Iterative work on focusing coils and neural dampeners eventually produced a stable, handheld emitter: the Psionic Rifle. The weapon projects a concentrated lance of psionic energy that disrupts the target's motor functions, producing a brief but combat-deciding stun window. Within XCOM's operational doctrine, the Psionic Rifle is prized not for its damage profile—modest by the standards of a plasma cannon or a heavy sniper rifle—but for the tempo it imposes on a battle. A stunned Sectoid that cannot fire, a frozen Muton that cannot charge, a silenced Berserker that cannot detonate: these are the moments that turn a losing firefight into a survivable one. Squad leaders frequently assign the rifle to a support or heavy soldier positioned to cover choke points, where a single stun can break an enemy's advance and buy the squad precious seconds to reposition. In XCOM 2, the weapon's lineage continues as XCOM's research into psionic applications deepens. The underlying principle remains the same—directed psionic disruption—but the platform benefits from the broader alien-tech integration available in the sequel, making it a more reliable and accessible option in the mid-game arsenal.

In Their Own Story

The corridor reeked of burnt polymer and something sweeter, something organic, that the soldiers had learned to associate with Sectoid flesh. Three of them were still moving, still clicking, still advancing. Two were down. The heavy's rifle was dry. "Psionic. Now." The order was two words, flat, no inflection. The support soldier raised the rifle. It hummed in her hands, a vibration she felt in her molars before she heard it. She lined up the lead Sectoid, the one with its arm already raised, the one that would kill the rookie in the next two seconds if she missed. She fired. The bolt was not light exactly, not sound, not heat. It was a pressure behind the eyes, a wrongness in the geometry of the corridor. The Sectoid's arm froze. Its clicking stopped. It stood there, perfectly still, a statue of chitin and malice, while the other two turned toward the new threat and the squad reformed, moved, lived. The heavy racked the bolt of her rifle. "Good shot." The support soldier lowered the Psionic Rifle. Her hands were trembling. They always were, after.

Reader's Guide

The Psionic Rifle is a research weapon, not an alien-tech salvage. It appears as a node in the XCOM tech tree and becomes available once the requisite prerequisite research is completed. It does not require a specific soldier class and can be equipped by any operative, though its stun-centric design makes it most effective in the hands of a support or heavy soldier tasked with covering lanes and choke points. As an energy weapon, it sits in the mid-game tier. Its damage is moderate, comparable to other energy rifles of the era, but its distinguishing feature is the stun probability applied to each successful hit. A stunned enemy is removed from the current round's action, which in tight corridors or during a Berserker's approach can be worth more than any damage bonus. Range is functional for mid-range engagements; it is not a sniper tool. Tactically, the Psionic Rifle fills the crowd-control slot in a squad loadout. Pair it with a soldier who has high aim and will be firing into groups of two or more enemies. A single stun on a clustered Sectoid squad can collapse an entire enemy turn. It pairs well with a heavy weapon for follow-up damage on the stunned target, or with a sniper who can pick off the frozen enemy before it recovers. Avoid equipping it on a soldier whose role is pure damage output; the rifle's value is in the stun, not the kill.
