Rover
Two points of armor, three points of speed, and nowhere to hide.
The Rover is a light, single-soldier ground vehicle in the XCOM franchise, appearing in both XCOM: Enemy Unknown (2012) and XCOM 2 (2016). Developed by Firaxis Games and published by 2K Games, it serves as the franchise's fastest and most fragile vehicle, designed for rapid repositioning of a lone operative across the battlefield. In XCOM: Enemy Unknown the Rover must be unlocked through the research tree, while in XCOM 2 it is available to the player from the very first mission without any prior research. In both titles it occupies the 'light vehicle' class, trading all defensive capability for unmatched speed and a small footprint.

Lore & Background
The Rover is a compact, low-slung tactical vehicle built for one purpose: get a single soldier from point A to point B before the aliens can react. Its minimal chassis, exposed running gear, and single-occupant cockpit make it the least protected vehicle in the XCOM arsenal, but its speed rating of three—higher than any other vehicle in either game—means it can cross a map in two turns where an APC would need three. In XCOM: Enemy Unknown the Rover is an early research reward, sitting near the base of the vehicle tech tree. It represents the first time the player can move a soldier without walking, and its fragility is a deliberate design lesson: speed without armor is a gamble. In XCOM 2 the Rover is handed to the player at the start of the campaign, serving as the default vehicle for the first several missions before heavier options like the APC or Gunship are researched. Its role shifts from novelty to utility: a quick insert-and-extract tool for a Specialist or a lone operative needing to reach cover. Tactically, the Rover's niche is repositioning. Because it carries only one soldier and has the lowest armor of every vehicle, it is a poor choice for holding a line or absorbing fire. Instead, experienced commanders use it to shuttle a sniper to a ridge, pull a wounded soldier out of the open, or stage a flanking maneuver that a walking squad simply cannot achieve in time.
In Their Own Story
The rain had turned the alley into a brown river. Sergeant Okafor watched through the rover's narrow viewport as two Sectoids peeled off the wall, their elongated limbs clicking against the wet concrete. She had one turn. The rover's engine whined to life, a thin metallic shriek that cut through the downpour, and she kicked the throttle. The little vehicle leapt forward, spraying a fan of dirty water, and she counted the tiles—three, four, five—until the Sectoids' heads snapped around and their shots sparked off the rover's two points of armor like angry fireflies. By the time the second one locked on, Okafor was already behind the collapsed overpass, the rover's hull smoking, and the fight was over before it had really begun. She patted the dashboard. "Good girl," she muttered, and the rover idled, patient, waiting for the next order.

OBTAINMENT: In XCOM: Enemy Unknown the Rover is unlocked via a research slot in the early vehicle tech tree. In XCOM 2 it requires no research and is available from the first mission. TECH TREE POSITION: EU/WE – one of the first vehicle projects, immediately accessible after base construction. XCOM 2 – no research gate; it is the default vehicle for the opening missions and remains in the pool until heavier vehicles are built. TACTICAL NICHE: The Rover is a mobility tool, not a platform. With the lowest armor in the vehicle lineup it will be destroyed by a single heavy alien shot, so it should never be used to hold a position. Its three-speed rating lets it cross the map in fewer turns than any other vehicle, making it ideal for: (1) inserting a sniper or specialist onto a distant ridge before the alien turn, (2) extracting a wounded soldier from open ground, (3) staging a flanking push that a walking squad cannot achieve within the same turn. Pair it with a soldier who has high movement or a defensive cover position at the destination, because the rover itself offers almost no protection. In XCOM 2, where it is free from turn one, it doubles as a low-risk way to test a new map's layout before committing an APC or Gunship.
Did You Know?
- The Rover has the highest speed rating (3) of every vehicle in both XCOM: Enemy Unknown and XCOM 2, making it the fastest way to move a soldier across the map.
- In XCOM 2 the Rover is the only vehicle that requires zero research or construction; it is available to the player from the very first mission.
- With only 2 armor points, the Rover is the most fragile vehicle in the franchise and can be destroyed by a single shot from most alien heavy weapons.
- The Rover's single-soldier capacity means it cannot be used to transport a full squad, limiting it to one-off repositioning rather than bulk movement.
